Hello there and welcome to the first blog post in a while. We've been hard at work doing stuff and redoing stuff and we were so focused we forgot to post things here as well. But now we're back and here to show you a bunch of new stuff, but before we do, we wanted to go back and take a look at the things even we often overlook: the walls and floors and background. at first they were the most important thing to work on, literally the building blocks of the game. but as we moved on to the coding and characters, these once all important pieces faded into the background, so we thought we should bring the background into the foreground so to speak.

Here's the first background bricks we made compared to the ones we are using now.
The process for deciding what our floor and wall tiles would look like looked less like an evolution like above and more like picking favorites.

When we first began, we thought we wouldn't need to focus so much on the environment and the most important thing was the characters and game mechanics. As we really started making the game (around the time that art was starting to be made) we quickly found out that we couldn't just slap together some bricks and call it a day. The environment that you have control over building as a game developer is important and the small choices you might think are simple and straightforward actually change the entire feeling of the level and thus the experience of the player.
We also had to keep this in mind as we started making art for other objects in the level like treasure and save points. Here's comparisons between our old treasure and the one we use now.

And here we have the old bookshelf and the new one. We had some issues bringing the old one in and had to redesign it.

We went into this trying to make a fun game with cute characters and we hope that we can achieve that with the environments we plan to make. 6 more to go!
